Ride of Silence - Cleveland
Join cyclists worldwide in a silent slow-paced ride in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways. The purpose of the ride is:
- To HONOR those who have been injured or killed
- To RAISE AWARENESS that we are here
- To ask that we all SHARE THE ROAD
On May 19, 2010 the Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.
In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride Of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed.
The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. There is no brochure, no sponsors and no registration fees. The ride, which is held during Bike Safety month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for those who have been killed or injured.
All participants should wear helmets. Please also wear a shirt that is predominately white, if possible.
The Cleveland Ride of Silence will have two starting points which will come together at a central meeting place for a brief ceremony. Riders will assemble at 5:45pm in two locations: downtown (near Cleveland City Hall) and the Heights neighborhoods (at Whole Foods Market). Both groups will depart at 6:10pm and ride to University Circle. Along the way, we will pick up additional riders near:
- Cleveland City Hall (601 Lakeside Ave)
- NOACA (1299 Superior)
- Plain Dealer (1801 Superior)
- Cleveland State University (along E18th St)
- WEWS TV5 (3001 Euclid)
- Aids Taskforce (3210 Euclid)
- Center for Families & Children (4500 Euclid)
- Pierre's Ice Cream (6200 Euclid)
- Cleveland Clinic (9500 Euclid)

- St Paul’s Episcopal (2747 Fairmount)

Following a brief ceremony at University Hospitals on Adelbert at 7:00pm you have two options, both of which will be led by a group guide:
- take RTA back to your starting location (approximately 6 miles of bike riding)
- ride back to your original starting location (approximately 11 miles)
If you have any questions or would like to volunteer to be a ride guide, please contact Lois Moss - lois [at] walkroll [dot] com
If you are not going to be in Cleveland on May 19 and are interested in joining another ride or organizing a ride at a different city, info on both is available at www.rideofsilence.org.

Re: Ride of Silence - Cleveland
Improving rider safety is an issue everyone can agree and support. While I wish a Ride of Silence was not necessary, I think it's important to gather together and reflect on those injured, whether here or elsewhere around the country or around the world. Cyclists are an important community. Each year we've done this, we've sadly had to mourn someone's loss and call for improved safety on the road. This is a short, but important ride. I urge everyone -- on or off road cyclists, club cyclists or polo players, messengers or commuting lawyers, students or teachers, to join together on this important issue.
